Replacing the natural source of milk for animals has always presented a challenge in mimicking the nutrient profile of milk. However the use of milk replacers and modern processing methods allows the construction of diets capable of delivering equivalent performance at a lower cost compared to whole milk. However selecting the correct replacement can critically affect the health and performance of the infant animal. The difference is often in the processing for example where careful control of temperature is vital in preserving the integrity of milk proteins. If the digestibility of the protein is to be preserved then great care is needed in the manufacturing step.
