Park Tonks Ltd. will receive up to £60,000 from the Department of Trade & Industry under the 'Smart Award' scheme, to support small firms in turning their innovative ideas into commercial products. The Project aims to improve profitability for the pig farmer by increasing growth weights and reducing the time from birth to slaughter by feeding "PIGS BREAKFAST" to very young piglets aged from 8-18 days. The product consists of a unique blend of palatable phytonutrients, which are powerful antioxidants. Park Tonks Ltd. aim to further optimise the exact mix of phytonutrients required to maximise growth rates, as well as establish the optimum method of feeding. The on-farm research will be carried out in conjunction with Porcine Services in Bury St. Edmunds. 'PIGS BREAKFAST - is designed to be fed to very young piglets from 8-18 days of age and is a unique blend of palatable phytonutrients, which are powerful antioxidants. It is expected this new style of feed will encourage the natural 'rooting' behaviour and earlier development of the piglets' digestive and immune systems to increase weaning weights; eliminate the need for growth promoters and antibiotics and reduce post-weaning stress and disease. Increased profitability for the pig farmer will result from a greater production of piglets per sow each year, increased growth weights and reduced time from birth to slaughter. The aim of the project is to establish the exact mix of the phytonutrients required to maximise these improved growth rates and subsequently to establish the optimum method of feeding. Such research will take place via initial farm and laboratory tests to validate the effects of "PIGS BREAKFAST". |
